I attended the premiere of kannada movie Lucia in London yesterday and mind you, I was surprised that the movie was houseful and I had to sit literally in “Gandhi class” to watch it as I was about 10 minutes late.
This movie has generated a lot of hype over the last 1.5 years for the reason that it is audience funded and that Pawan Kumar, the director has kept the interest alive through all the social networking channels.

So my eagerness had no bounds to see what this film is all about. Made on a 5D digital camera with a minimal budget of 50 lakh rupees, I was bowled over by the rich picturisation in each frame that is presented. There are few angles which has been pulled off , that even a seasoned cinematographer would be impressed. Hats off to Siddharth Nuni for a great commendable cinematography!
The editing is top class for a script that demands minute detail to attention.
Coming to the plot, the story talks about the life of a simple torch bearer in the cinema halls, one we have crossed several times in movie theatres, but the one no one remembers. If you think this movie is a typical love story and his struggles, well you are sadly mistaken and I am glad that was not the case. Sathish Nenasam makes his debut as the lead hero in this movie, so ably directed by Pawan , that you feel for his character throughout the movie. Shruthi, as the simple girl, working in a Pizza joint, has shown tremendous potential.
But, I have to specially mention Achuth, the supporting actor as the theatre owner here. What an actor! He brings in the nuances to his character with such ease that one remembers of great legends such as Ashwath , balakrishna, vajramuni etc.
Of course, the real hero, the master mind, the brain teaser , behind this movie is Pawan, for his clear vision on what he intends to portray. The script is brilliant , a very difficult one to narrate to anyone. But to execute it so masterfully, with such minimal budget needs some talent and his talent is unmistakably exceptional. He is a director , to watch out for, for the pressure of living up to audience expectations , after having it crowd funded is not for the weak hearted!
I will not divulge further details of the plot to avoid a spoiler alert. The story takes you through lots of twists and turns and it is very essential that you do not get distracted, for you may miss an important link. It is definitely a movie that gives some work to your brain ;))
You are left guessing till the end as to where is this film leading , when all the sub-plots fall into place. And when it does make sense, you want to watch it again , just to prove to yourself , that your judgement was right!
The music as we all know , is brilliant from a first timer Poorna, who has given such beautiful hummable tunes, my personal favourite being, Nee maaye ologo.
For being presented with the usual masala mass movies or typical love stories for ages, this film stands tall presenting a genre that is the less trodden path in filmmaking in Indian cinema , be it hindi , kannada or any language for that matter.
I would recommend this movie to anybody and everyone , for this movie gives a different dimension and you may want to look within to realise your real dreams in life.
I kindly encourage everyone, who has the stereotype image on kannada industry, to be open minded, go and watch this movie, as you may well end up comparing it with some great Hollywood movies of our time.
